Despaysément
Dépaysement describes the feeling of disorientation and bewilderment one might feel upon being in a foreign environment or the lack of the familiarity when at home. In this body of work, the artist explores this deeply rooted sentiment to her disassociation with her heritage of being Cajun. The narrative acts as intimate prayers to connect her to something that seems so distant and unfamiliar. The imagery depicts a woman trying to tie herself to objects that have symbolic meaning behind them, representing a connection to what she lacks or what she seeks. Whether that is a physical, an emotional, or a mental tie there is room left for contemplation and contextualize based on these connections or lack thereof.
